Treasurer’s Do Nothing Approach Is Not An Option

Apr-02-2009

For the third day in a row Treasurer John Lenders has refused to tell the Parliament how the Brumby Government will protect the Victorian budget from the potential loss of millions of dollars in federal funding due to the use of fraudulent patient data from our public hospitals, Shadow Treasurer Kim Wells said today.
"Just what is wrong with the Brumby Labor Government when its Treasurer refuses to address a fundamental issue of good economic management of Victoria's finances?" Mr Wells said.
"Despite the warning from Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon of the possible loss of federal public hospital funding if Victoria was found to have manipulated health performance records, the Treasurer has done nothing.
"Despite the Auditor-General's report on public hospital performance data confirming widespread manipulation of public hospital performance measures, the Treasurer has done nothing.
"Despite every incentive to get to the bottom of this issue the Treasurer has done nothing but claim the possibility Victoria may have to reimburse millions of dollars under the Australian Health Care Agreements is just 'hypothetical'.
"What does it take to pick up a phone to his Labor mates, the Federal Treasurer or the Federal Health Minister to clarify the issue?
"What does it take to ask his Department for a briefing on the potential size of the problem facing Victoria's finances?
"What does it take for the Treasurer to even say he is taking this problem seriously?
"Newsflash Treasurer - this is no time to put millions of dollars at risk when your budget revenues are already under siege.
"It is time to act responsibly. It is time to act decisively.
"There is something very wrong with a government and a Treasurer who do not take the welfare of the budget seriously and just do nothing when it is under threat," Mr Wells said.
