Call For Anyone With Information On Cause Of Hazelwood Mine Fire To Contact Victoria Police

The Victorian Coalition Government urges anyone with information on the cause of the fire that moved into the Hazelwood open cut mine to come forward to assist police with their enquiries.

Victoria Police have advised that the Hazelwood mine fire is believed to have started at a site on the Strzelecki Highway between Morwell and Mirboo North on 9 February at approximately 1.30pm. An arson chemist has inspected the site and police are treating this fire as suspicious.

Arson is a despicable and horrific crime that can cause serious injury or loss of life, and devastate our environment, destroy homes and properties.

Deliberately or recklessly lighting bushfires and grass fires will not be tolerated.

Similarly, it can be the careless actions of a driver flicking a lit cigarette out of a car window into a dry bushy area or careless operation of equipment such as angle grinders causing sparks to ignite dry grass, which can be just as devastating.

Regardless, each of these types of events involve criminal offences and can place lives and property at severe risk.

If you have seen something, say something. Report the behaviour by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Triple Zero (000).
